Below you will find a list of the frequently asked questions by those new to chiropractic. If you require any further information after reading this page, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Q – Can chiropractic help with my problem?
A – The answer is usually yes, but the initial consultation will confirm if chiropractic is the right thing for you. If we can’t help you, we will refer you to the right expert and you won’t be charged for that visit.
Q – What is a chiropractor? (and how does it differ from osteopathy)
A – Chiropractors are the experts in diagnosing and removing spinal subluxations (nerve stress).
Nerve stress can cause pain and stiffness and lead to body dysfunction and ill health. We correct the spine by gently adjusting it, returning its normal flexibility and alignment. This in turn, allows the body to function better and express health. Osteopaths work more with the circulatory system and muscles, with less focus on the nervous system.
Q – What is subluxation?
A – A bone (vertebra) or disc (cartilage) in your spine that are out of place and irritate a nerve. This nerve stress can cause pain and muscle spasm which leads to stiffness, body disfunction and disease.
Q – What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
A – Adjustments are gentle, effective and safe movements of your spine. The chiropractor uses his hands (or specific equipment) to apply controlled pressure in a precise direction to a joint that is not moving properly. It may be a quick movement or slow constant pressure. The goal in mind is to remove nerve stress and bring the body back to alignment and balance so it can express health and vitality.
Q – What is the popping sound?
A – The same as a knuckle cracking. It indicates the joint has stretched apart and separated slightly which can cause a release of tiny gas bubbles into the joint.
Q – Can I “Crack” My Own Back?
A – We would definitely not advise this!. You cannot properly control the forces involved and when you click your own joints you are unlikely to make the problem better and possibly doing more damage. Even our Chiropractors who are skilled in performing adjustments do not adjust themselves. If you feel like you need to click your joints you probably need to see your Chiropractor!
Q – Will I need X-Rays?
A – Only if necessary. It depends on what your chiropractor finds during the consultation and examination. X-Rays are an important diagnostic tool that prevent Chiropractors from having to guess or take chances. In certain cases, treating without X-Rays – would be like asking a car mechanic to work on the car without lifting the bonnet
Q – Is Chiropractic care safe?
A – Chiropractic is extremely safe and a low risk intervention. Occasionally clients may experience some mild tenderness or stiffness after an adjustment. However, this is usually short lived and a good sign that the body is adapting to the healthy changes.
Q – Do I need a referral from my GP?
A – No, you do not require a referral from your GP or any other health care professional. Chiropractic is the third largest primary health care profession in the world after Medicine and Dentistry. However it is completely private and not covered by the NHS, meaning you can self refer. In our practice we find that the majority of our clients are referred from other clients who have had great results.
Q – How long will it take to get better?
A – Healing takes time and differs from person to person. It depends on how long you have had the condition, severity, age, previous injuries, general health, diet, fitness, etc. We promise to do anything we can – to address your complaint as soon as possible – to get you out of discomfort, then to get you well and keep you well.
Q – How often will I need to come?
A – At your Report of Findings, your Chiropractor will tell you about the result of your Initial Consultation, they will explain how many treatments you are likely to need and the likely timescales, and of course answer all your questions.
As a rule, you will need more frequent treatments in the beginning of care – in order to mobilise your spine and improve the way your nervous system function. This will usually result in the relief of your aches or pain. Repetition of the treatment at the beginning of care is similar to training the body to perform a new task (just like going to the gym). The more it’s done, the quicker your body is able to hold the new balanced state. The frequency of your visits is reduced as your spinal function improves.
Q – How much will it cost?
A – This varies from individual to individual, and depends on factors such as the length of time the problem has been present, your motivation to get well, the ability to carry out home care instructions (exercises, stretches, etc).
Q – Is it covered by private insurance?
A – Yes. You may be covered by insurance, however, this will depend on your policy. We recommend you check before you begin care.
