Pregnancy Massage

Benefits of pregnancy massage

Pregnancy massage has the same general benefits as normal massage, including:

  • Reduction in muscle tension and stiffness.
  • Reduction in muscles spasms.
  • Reduction in muscle scar tissue, muscle knots and
  • Increased levels of the body’s endorphins, the feel-good hormones- this helps to reduce stress, anxiety and pain.
  • Promotes relaxation.
  • Increased blood flow and circulation.
  • Increased oxygen and nutrient uptake.
  • Removal of toxins and waste products.

During pregnancy, there is an increase in physical and mental stresses being placed on the body due to the hormonal, emotional and structural/ physical changes taking place in the body.   In addition to the above benefits, pregnancy massage can also help with the additional stresses that are placed on the body during pregnancy by:

  • Reducing swelling in hands, feet and ankles.
  • Reducing sciatic pain.
  • Easing muscular discomforts and pain in areas like the low back and neck, legs and arms.
  • Helping to increase flexibility.
  • Helping with relaxation which in turn can improve sleep.
  • Strengthening the immune system.
  • Easing the stress mothers often feel before and after the birth.
  • Reducing joint pain.
  • Reducing muscle tension and headaches.

This helps the body to function more efficiently which helps to improve and maintain overall health and well-being during and after pregnancy.

What to expect

It is advisable to wear loose, comfortable clothing and to avoid eating a large meal or drinking too much fluids before the massage.

The massage will take place in a warm, comfortable room with relaxing music playing in the background to provide a relaxing atmosphere which will help to reduce stress/ tension.

The therapist will probably ask you about your overall health and how your pregnancy is progressing; please answer as accurately as possible as this is important when they are determining how to proceed with the treatment/ session.   If you have any specific areas of concern, these should be pointed out to your therapist before the massage has started.

During the massage only the area of the body that is being worked on will be exposed and the therapist will use pregnancy pillows to help you stay comfortable on the couch.  If lying on your front is difficult, even with the use of a pregnancy pillow, then the massage may be performed in the side-lying position instead.

After the massage, it is advisable to drink plenty of water to aid in the removal of toxins and to help rehydrate your body.  It is also advisable to avoid too much strenuous work/ activity after the massage to fully allow your body and muscles to relax.

Massage sessions typically last for 30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes depending on what you require.
